Diary of a DIY Dressmaker: January 2019

The decorations are down, the skies are grey but there is a positive prospect in the air.

My diary is new and I can’t wait to fill it with exciting creations and happy times.

I feel the need to have something fresh to wear crisp looking yet comfortable. I thought that the Tilly and the buttons Coco dress would be the perfect pattern. I’ve made Coco several times before but never the plain version without the funnel neck and cuffs. The style of this dress is very me, it's practical yet playful.

It didn’t take me long to pick the fabric from My Sewing Box, the Stof of Denmark Dandelions Blue Sweatshirting fabric felt like the perfect match. This fabric has a good weight and recovers well after a stretch, and is super soft and snuggly against my skin.

Like with all of Tilly and the Buttons patterns, the packaging and instructions are fantastic and really take you through every step. I recommend this pattern for a beginner to sewing with knit fabrics. The dress took me an hour and a half to sew.

My sewing method was:

  • Pre-wash fabric at on a 30 wash
  • Dry it naturally
  • Pressed on a cotton setting with steam
  • I cut out the Tilly size 5 (uk14)
  • Cut the fabric using a rotary blade and mat whilst using pattern weights
  • I used my over locker to create 95% of the garment
  • Finished the hems on my sewing machine using a 2mm zig zag stitch
  • Throughout I used wonder clips to hold the pieces together whilst sewing
  • I made zero hacks or alterations

I am so pleased with how this turned out, it's just what I had in mind! This would also look lovely in the pink version of this sweatshirting too.

Until next month...

Happy sewing

Love Carrie
