The Sonny jacket is a fantastic all-rounder for covering up when there's a chill in the air, and is ideal for the confident beginner. Why are these patterns so great? Not only do you get the pattern, but also full-colour step-by-step instructions, so you don't have to be a great pattern reader to be able to make this wardrobe essential. 

You can make either utility style with a classic collar or cute and trendy with the frill prairie collar, plus choose from standard hip-length or a cute cropped hem. It has a boxy fit bodice with drop shoulders and princess seams to create gentle shaping at the bust. There are optional chest pockets and flaps, and a simple straight sleeve. You'll also learn how to sew mock flat-felled seams to create a durable finish for your jacket.

Medium- to heavy-weight woven fabrics that hold their shape are ideal for Sonny, such as denim, twill, canvas, corduroy, jacquard or wool. For the prairie collar version, check the fabric is light enough so it can be gathered once folded in two (or use separate fabric for frill).
