Diary of a DIY Dressmaker - Dec '18

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

Christmas has to be the best time of the year, it's full of magic and joy.  I live for Christmas and I’m so excited that this is my first Christmas as a dressmaker.

The hours spent trawling the high street for festive garments are gone and I can now be the creator of my own Christmas wardrobe.

For me December is all about being with loved ones and creating memories that will last forever.  With this in mind I want to have a laid-back approach to my sewing this month, but I do want to sew some novelty garments that are quick and satisfying to make.

After browsing the fabrics at My Sewing Box, the Stof of Denmark red stars linen screamed Christmas!

I knew the stars would lend itself to a Tilly and the Buttons Cleo dress. I knew I wanted some festive buttons but, in the end, I went with some complementary star shimmer buttons which do still feel festive.

This fabric is suitable for a Cleo and I would recommend wearing with leggings or tights as the material doesn’t have a smooth finish to the wrong side. This fabric would be great as an apron or bag as well.  The fabric is nice and wide so has lots of potential to be thrifty and creative.

My sewing method was

  • Pre-wash fabric at on a 30 wash.
  • Dry it naturally.
  • Pressed on a cotton setting with steam.
  • I cut out the Cleo size 5 (uk14) in the split front version with front pocket and button fastening.
  • Cut the fabric using a rotary blade and mat whilst using pattern weights.
  • I used my over locker to finish the seams of the garment as this fabric does fray.
  • I used pinking shears to clip around the curves and to trim seam allowances.
  • Throughout I used wonder clips to hold the pieces together whilst sewing.

I did a happy dance when this dress came together. This dress is going to be perfect for my annual decorating the house and putting the Christmas tree up with a port and lemon in hand.

Christmas is all about joy and this dress makes me feel happy.

Until next month...

Happy sewing
