Diary of a DIY Dressmaker: February 2019
How is it February already? I do love this month; though it's short and sweet, the hubby gets me some flowers for Valentines. Wardrobe-wise I need to sort out my staples and I need more of them, especially as I’m still layering up.
I want to pull out one of my trusty favourite patterns, the Tilly and the Buttons Agnes top. This pattern is a great all year-round design and doesn’t take up that much fabric. I fell head over heels for the Deer floral jersey, the colours are just everything and it's even organic! I knew that both the fabric and pattern would work well together.
The fabric feels high quality and the recovery is fantastic, perfect for this top. I want a whole bolt of it to make dresses, PJ’s, the lot!
Like with all of Tilly and the Buttons patterns, the packaging and instructions are fantastic and really take you through every step. I have made several Agnes tops and it’s a great go-to pattern for a satisfying sew. Great for beginners and a quick fix for an established sewer. I wanted the plain version as it suits my body shape more. The trickiest part is the neckband - it took 2 attempts for me to get it right! The more you make the easier it becomes.
My sewing method was:
- Pre-wash fabric at on a 30 wash
- Dry it naturally
- Pressed on a cotton setting with steam
- I cut out the Tilly size 5 (uk14)
- Cut the fabric using a rotary blade and mat whilst using pattern weights
- I used my over locker to create 95% of the garment
- Finished the hems on my sewing machine using a 2mm zig zag stitch
- Throughout I used wonder clips to hold the pieces together whilst sewing
- I made zero hacks or alterations
I adore this fabric, therefore I love this make. I’ve worn it here with my jeans, but I have plenty of Cleo dungaree dresses it will team up with well!
Until next month...
Happy sewing
Love Carrie
