Diary of a DIY Dressmaker: June 2019
Hello June, you've come around so quickly! Carrie's thinking ahead already this month with a summer-worthy make you won't be able to resist...
Diary of a DIY Dressmaker: June 2019
I’ve just returned from a lovely holiday and my skin has been kissed by the sun. I feel inspired to wear floaty summery dresses. With it being June I’m sure there will start to be garden party invites coming my way so I wanted to make a lovely feminine dress that will take me from home to garden party. When I saw the Sew Over It Eve dress available, it looked perfect for what I was looking for, and I couldn’t resist using the Lisa Comfort lilac cotton lawn.
My sewing method was
- Pre-wash fabric at on a 30 wash.
- Dry it naturally.
- Pressed on a cotton setting with steam.
- I cut out the size 16 as with being a wrap dress I wanted to feel covered over the bust.
- Cut the fabric using a rotary blade and mat.
- I used my over locker to finish the seams.
- I used pins when cutting the fabric out.
- I opted for the long dipped hem dress and flutter sleeves.
- Where I could I overlocked the edges before I put the garment together.
This dress came together really quickly, and it took 2 evenings to put together. The fabric handled lovely under the sewing machine and I think the fabric print was very clever as each part of the dress had plenty of print on it.
I would say that this fabric creases, which is a known trait of most cotton lawn. I advise pressing at each stage with a hot steam iron so your seams stay nice and crisp.
The pattern instructions were nice and clear, and I was able to follow them without any bother. I love the finished dress and my favourite parts on the dress are the flutter sleeves and the dipped hem. I will definitely make this dress again! Next time I will try a nice crepe for extra swoosh factor...
Until next month,
Happy sewing
Love Carrie
